“'Roid rage” was not yet part of the vernacular when director Nicholas Ray (of Rebel Without a Cause fame) made this feature, based on a true medical-mystery story about a man who experiences wild mood swings after becoming dependent on cortisone, the experimental cure for his heart malady. James Mason's startling, malevolant portrayal of an everyman's Jekyll-and-Hyde dissolution was further elevated by Ray's use of the new Cinescope widescreen technology.
