Reversing the chapter divisions of Murnau’s TABU, director Miguel Gomes has shot a romance about colonials in Africa that simmers with visual poetry. The scenes in Africa are shot on black-and-white 16mm film stock, while the ones in Lisbon use 35mm. “The contrast between the sharp darkness of 35mm and the textured glow of 16mm is mesmerizing,” (Jay Weissberg).
