Black Cinema Discussion Panel

Mon February 12
7:30 PM

Please join us for a special panel discussion focused on the history, cultural significance, and current standing of Black cinema, featuring a panel of industry professionals. Presented by a collaboration between the Department of Cinema Studies & Moving Image Arts, the Center for African and African American Studies, and the International Film Series.

Panelists include:

Writer/Director Charles Burnett. Charles Burnett is an unsung master of American cinema who led the way for black independent filmmakers to tell their stories on-screen with poetic-realist revelations like KILLER OF SHEEP and TO SLEEP WITH ANGER.

Actor Sy Richardson. A gifted actor with an impressive filmography, you may remember Sy Richardson from such films as TO SLEEP WITH ANGER, REPO MAN, and STRAIGHT TO HELL.

Filmmaker Katrina Miller. Director of THIS IS [NOT] WHO WE ARE. "Storytelling and visual art have always played a big part in my existence and I put the fire I have for life into the work I do."

Filmmaker/Actor Mtume Gant. As a Filmmaker Mtume Gant's films have screened in festivals such as Aspen Shortsfest, Cucalorus and Ashland Independent Film Festival with numerous awards for his projects.

Hosted by Assistant Professor and Filmmaker Skinner Myers. Skinner Myers is an award-winning filmmaker based out of Los Angeles. He has written and directed 12 films, including THE SLEEPING NEGRO, La Tierra del Exodo, Nightmares by the Sea, Things of Beauty Burn and Frank Embree, which took home the Grand Jury Award at Hollyshorts.
