Reha Erdem's narrative film addresses the pains that afflict everyone who must pass from one phase of life into another, whether young or old. The story unfolds among a family of rural Turkish villagers, revealing the ways in which their five daily prayers unite and divide their lives. The film's Turkish title literally translates as Five Times; the film's five segments are each headed with a time of day corresponding to a Muslim call to prayer. The segments are presented in reverse order, the dawn prayer opening the last one. The children's passage into adulthood creates the dramatic tension; the filmmaker's attention to time and ritual questions whether their actions and emotions are as inevitable as the rhythms of their days.
