Weekly Wednesday Update, September 15, 2021

Tonight (Wednesday, Sept. 15, 7:30 p.m.), the IFS is excited to bring Boulder the theatrical premiere of David Byrne’s hit Broadway show and Emmy-nominated special AMERICAN UTOPIA. Directed by Spike Lee, this filmed version of the electrifying Broadway musical sensation brings Oscar, Grammy, and Golden Globe-winning musician David Byrne (Talking Heads) together with 11 musical artists from around the world to perform songs from Byrne’s career. Hailed by critics as “pure bliss,” the performance is a joyful celebration of music and dance, a call to action to engage in our democracy, and an invitation to reimagine our own utopias. As a bonus, tonight’s screening will feature never-before-seen footage and a special introduction from Byrne.

We’ll then skip a few days to accommodate the craziness that unfolds on game day and return Sunday, Sept. 19, for a 2 p.m. matinee of SUMMER OF SOUL (...OR, WHEN THE REVOLUTION COULD NOT BE TELEVISED). Directed by Questlove and featuring legendary musicians performing at the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival, SUMMER OF SOUL screened at Sundance and BIFF and was a clear audience favorite. It’s the kind of documentary you can see again and again — and, with that in mind, we’re giving it a bonus show on Monday, Sept. 20, at 7:30 p.m.

All shows are in Muenzinger Auditorium, where we are capping attendance to allow for social distancing. Mask mandates apply. See you there!
